Exercise Physiology FAQs

We get it – Exercise Physiology isn’t something everyone has heard of before, and it often raises a lot of questions. That’s why we’ve pulled together some of the most common FAQs, so you can get a clear idea of what we do and how we can help.

What is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise physiology studies how exercise affects the human body.

Exercise Physiologists (EPs) use evidence-based targeted exercise, movement strategies, and lifestyle interventions to help people with their physical and mental health.

Here at Revitalise Health & Rehab, we have a special focus on using exercise to help you manage the symptoms of chronic conditions, disabilities or injuries.

Our goal is to focus on understanding your health background to create a plan tailored to you, to help manage symptoms, allow you to move safely and confidently, and improve your quality of life.

Who can Exercise Physiologists help?

Exercise physiologists (EP’s) help people with chronic diseases, neurological conditions, disabilities, mental health conditions and injuries.

Under each category is a wide range of conditions, see a list of examples above.

How is an Exercise Physiologist different to a Physio?

In Australia, both Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists are both university trained allied health professionals and use movement to help people recover, manage health conditions, and improve overall wellbeing.

Physiotherapists assess, diagnose, and treat injuries, pain, and conditions that affect movement. They provide hands-on treatments (like massage, mobilisation, or dry needling) and tailored programs to support early recovery.

Exercise Physiologists (EPs) specialise in using exercise and lifestyle strategies to manage chronic conditions, support injury and chronic pain rehabilitation, and build strength and resilience. They work with people recovering from injuries, or those managing ongoing health conditions and disabilities, to safely return to activity and improve quality of life. EP’s also look at additional lifestyle interventions, unlike a physio, including managing stress, reducing sedentary behaviour and ongoing motivation, depending on the individual’s goals, health and lifestyle.

How is an Exercise Physiologist different to a Personal Trainer?

Personal Training is delivered by professionals who hold a Certificate III and IV in Fitness. Their role is to guide individuals who are generally healthy, with little to no existing injuries or medical conditions, in achieving fitness and lifestyle goals through structured exercise programs.

Exercise Physiologists, on the other hand, complete a minimum of four years of university study (including postgraduate training) and are accredited through Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA)

Their expertise extends beyond fitness to working with people living with injuries, chronic diseases, or disabilities.

They specialise in prescribing exercise as a form of rehabilitation, tailoring programs that improve function, reduce symptoms, and support long-term health – often by thinking creatively and holistically about what each client needs.
